Bitcoin saw a 2.8% decrease in price, dropping to $59,397.1 amidst concerns that Mt Gox may be preparing to distribute about $2 billion worth of tokens. This news has raised worries among traders over the potential impact of increased supply and a possible mass sell-off event in the cryptocurrency market.

It remains unclear how much Bitcoin Mt Gox currently holds, although reports indicate that the exchange has already moved around $9 billion worth of tokens earlier this year. The defunct exchange had started returning stolen tokens from a 2014 hack back to its clients in July, leading to initial price declines in Bitcoin.

Despite fears of a U.S. recession subsiding, Bitcoin has struggled to maintain levels above $60,000, with traders awaiting positive signals for the crypto market. While broader market sentiment has been positive due to expectations of interest rate cuts and a soft landing for the U.S. economy, Bitcoin’s performance has lagged behind the stock market’s recovery.

On Wednesday, altcoins followed Bitcoin’s downward trend, with Ether dropping by 3.4% to $2,594.51. Other altcoins such as SOL and XRP experienced losses between 2% and 3%, while tokens like MATIC and ADA saw gains of 5.3% and 3.3% respectively. The meme token DOGE also fell by 1.4% in response to market movements.

Investors are closely watching for further insights on U.S. interest rate cuts, with the Federal Reserve set to release minutes from its late-July meeting. Fed Chair Jerome Powell is scheduled to speak at the Jackson Hole Symposium on Friday, where he may provide additional guidance on interest rate decisions. Expectations are growing that the central bank will lower rates in September, impacting the broader financial markets.

The cryptocurrency market continues to face uncertainties and volatility as external factors, such as regulatory decisions and economic indicators, shape investor sentiment. Traders will need to stay vigilant and adapt to evolving market conditions as they assess the impacts of events like the potential token distributions from Mt Gox and the Fed’s interest rate decisions.
